Event Description:
The First Five: Pioneers in Community Policing Colored- Negro District exhibit, curated by Museum Director Terrance Cribbs-Lorrant, is a showcase of oral stories, written letters, and artifacts and images that help to present a different narrative on Community Policing. The practice of policing “your own kin” isn’t a new discovery. On September 1, 1944, a group of notable community leaders from Overtown, known as Colored Town, changed the trajectory of law enforcement in Miami completely; all while inspiring other states to incorporate blacks on their law enforcement. The impact of having colored officers, patrolling black communities ONLY, made a 75% positive adjustment to crime and safety within the Negro District in Miami according to, then, Chief Frank Mitchell. Imagine how community policing would impact communities of today! Come see this collection of historical facts for yourself. You will NOT be disappointed.
