SOUTHEAST OVERTOWN / PARK WEST COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY AWARDS TWO NEW BUSINESSES WITH OVER $250,000 IN GRANTS

MIAMI, FL | May 30, 2016 – On Monday May 23, 2016 the Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency board of commissioners awarded two new businesses with grants in an effort to continue to support the economic development underway in the Overtown area.

The SEOPW CRA board awarded local resident Mrs. Ultrina Harris with a commercial lease for space at “The Shops of Overtown.” The CRA, who owns the local shopping center, has renovated and rehabilitated the property to attract and accommodate commercial tenants. Additionally, Mrs. Harris received a $92,000 grant for tenant improvements in connection with “The Shops of Overtown”, for her clothing store that will offer adult clothing and children’s uniforms. She has been a resident of Overtown since 1996 and has a successful entrepreneurial past having owned several business in the area – including “Kicks on Wheels”, a men’s clothing and shoe store. With the opening of her new store, Mrs. Harris will give back to the community by hiring local residents and giving them the opportunity to gain valuable experience at an early age.

The SEOPW CRA also awarded Talmadge Frazier with a $200,00 grant for costs associated with the build out of “Brother Fraizer Ribs”, located at the Carver Apartment and Shoppes located at 801 NW 3rd Avenue. Brother Frazier’s Ribs has been located in the Overtown community since 1986. As an effort to expand his business, Mr. Frazier executed a lease agreement for commercial space at the Carver Apartments and sought assistance from the CRA for the build out costs of the new location. Mr. Frazier wants to provide a comfortable atmosphere for Overtown residents and visitors to enjoy quality food and friendly service in the redevelopment area. He also intends for Brother Fraizer’s Ribs to serve as more than a restaurant to the Overtown community by having “Jazz Ensemble Night” on Tuesdays, featuring local musicians and half priced meals. Friday’s will feature a “Surf and Turf” menu paired with old school music. There will also be a “College Night” where a portion of the revenue for that night will go towards a scholarship fund for college and vocational students in the Overtown area.
