07 Jun GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY MARKS START OF RENOVATIONS AT TOWN PARK PLAZA SOUTH
On May 31, 2017 , City of Miami Commission Chair Keon Hardemon & The Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) joined community leaders, local residents and representatives from the construction company, H.A. Contracting Corp., to break ground on the Town Park Plaza South Rehabilitation Project. The ceremony marked the start of renovations at the multi-family housing development. The CRA funded project will entail the total gut rehabilitation of 116 town-house style units with exterior and common area improvements.
Town Park South is a HUD Co-operative housing complex located in Overtown. The homes are amongst three Town Park communities that represent the most homeownership in the area. Originally constructed in 1971, the aging buildings have suffered from longstanding deferred maintenance, structural, plumbing, electrical problems and life safety issues. The buildings are also in need of a 40 year re-certification. In an effort to reverse the property’s decline, the CRA Board of Commissioners approved a $13.5 million grant to the Town Park South Association for the major renovation and rehabilitation project.
Construction of the 116 units will take place in phases. The first phase will start the end of May and includes the installation of new windows, roofs and doors. 90 percent of the buildings have already received roofs. Additionally, interior renovations to five of the 17 buildings will also began. During construction residents will be temporarily relocated to nearby housing at no cost. The project will entail removing all interior walls and the replacement of the plumbing and electrical systems. New flooring, cabinets and energy-efficient appliances will also be installed. Other exterior improvements will include the installation of new landscaping and sod, sidewalks, parking lot improvements and metal picket fencing with security features.
