Overtown Landmark: People’s Bar-b-que undergoes $1 Million in Renovations

MIAMI, FL | November 28, 2016 – One of Overtown’s landmark restaurants and Miami’s best place for barbecue and soul food, People’s Bar-b-que is undergoing a $1 million renovation.  People’s Bar-b-que is located at 360 NW 8th St, Miami, FL 33136 (corner of NW 8th Street. and 3rd Court, just off of I-95) and has been serving the community for over five decades.  The renovations are funded by the Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).

People’s Bar-b-que is embedded in the cultural fabric of Overtown. In 1925, Bobby Lewis Sr. opened what was then People’s Pharmacy just across the street from the current location on NW 8th Street and 4th Avenue. He was a North Carolina native and the county’s first black pharmacist. Lewis then expanded the pharmacy and began selling barbecue in the stand next door changing the name to People’s Pharmacy and Barbecue. Bobby Lewis Sr. left his business to his three sons and daughter-in law, who took over the business and focused on the barbecue serving pork, chicken, beef, souse and delicious side dishes.

The CRA funded project, will include a full remodeling of the interior and exterior of the building.  Interior improvements will consist of upgrading the existing kitchen, and reconfiguring the serving line for better efficiency and visual appeal. Additionally, a new feature will include a modern smoker that can be viewed at the serving counter, inviting patrons to take part in the barbecuing experience. There will also be new lighting installed throughout the restaurant, along with a new seating area and private dining room. Other enhancements include: upgrading the restaurant’s restrooms, mechanical, electrical and plumbing .Exterior improvements will include a bold new marquis sign that can be seen from I-95. People’s Bar-b-que is closed during renovations.
