HISTORIC OVERTOWN’S SOUL BASEL IS BACK WITH FOUR AMAZING EXHIBITS AND NUMEROUS EVENTS

MIAMI, FL – NOV. 22, 2016 – Historic Overtown’s Soul Basel is back with four amazing exhibits and a great line up of events for art enthusiast descending on Miami for the annual Art Basel festivities. Soul Basel is a collaborative effort between  the Southeast Overtown / Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (“CRA”) , local organizations  and the GMCVB Art of Black Miami  to  showcase Black art exhibitions  in Overtown  during the world-renowned Miami Art Basel Week, held November 30th, 2016 to December 4th, 2016.

 

Dozens of Black Art from world-renowned and emerging artisans will be on display at various locations: including the iconic Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex, the Former Clyde Killens Pool Hall, the Overtown Performing Arts Center and the Ward Rooming House.   The galleries include: The Art Africa Miami Arts Fair 2016, presented by the Urban Collective, the Visions of Our 44th President Barack Obama exhibit presented by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. and the Urban Experience, presented by Eye Urban TV. In addition to showcasing exciting works of art, each gallery will feature a series of programming and events that incorporates the new trend of visual art that is music, entertainment, film, and fashion. There will also be a series of guest lectures and a youth workshop.

 

Soul Basel is a marketing vehicle in partnership with local organizations and the GMCVB Art of Black Miami aimed at bringing awareness to Black art and highlighting Overtown during Miami Art Basel week. The art galleries are funded and or supported by the CRA and City of Miami Commission Chair Keon Hardemon, who is also the Chairperson of the CRA. The CRA’s goal during Art Basel is to attract local residents and visitors to the various art and culture facilities in Overtown.

In its 6th year, Art Africa Miami presents AFROTOPIA, a prospective thought on the world as we would want to see it.  The future is a site that does not exist yet, but one to be configured in a mental space. It is about investing in it through thought and imagination. Urgent, Inc. will present a multimedia exhibit of youth photography, art and media which document young people’s ability to critically examine complex sociopolitical and economic systems that impact their everyday lives. The exhibited work is the product of Urgent’s Film Arts Culture Coding Entrepreneurship (FACE) Program and Rites of Passage (ROP) Media Project. Contributing teens rise out of Miami’s cultural communities of Historic Overtown, Liberty City and Little Haiti. Presented by The Children’s Trust.
