CRA FUNDS SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM

CRA FUNDS SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM

MIAMI, FL–May 27, 2016–The Southeast Overtown/ Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (“SEOPW”) (“CRA”) has awarded the local youth organization, Urgent Inc. with a $205,000 grant for the continuation and expansion of the F.A.C.E. Summer Youth Employment & Training Program. The grant will fund a 7-week summer apprenticeship / internship program for 60 youth who are between the ages of 14 to 24 and reside within the SEOPW Redevelopment Area boundaries. The F.A.C.E. summer youth employment and training program was created by URGENT, Inc., a youth and community development organization based in Overtown as part of its mission to empower young minds to transform their communities. The F.A.C.E. program which acronym stands for Film, Arts & Culture, Coding and Entrepreneurship, will provide a unique opportunity for youth in Overtown to earn money this summer and obtain real work experience in the
above mentioned career sectors. The program will also include job coaching, community service, and leadership
development sessions.

As students prepare for summer break, the FACE Summer youth employment and training program is a significant need in the Overtown community. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (Nov 2013), the black youth unemployment rate for ages 16-19 is 393% higher than the national unemployment rate (35.5% vs. 7.3% respectively). As of the 2012 Census, only 54% of eligible workers age 16+ are in the labor force in Miami-Dade County. Within Overtown, the unemployment rate stands at 14.8% almost double the Miami rate. For Overtown youth between the ages of 16-19, the unemployment rate jumps up to just over 28.7%, more than three times the City of Miami average (ACS 2008-2012 5yr Estimate).

The CRA hopes through its funding of the FACE program and other similar job training programs, that it can help reduce unemployment and create future career opportunities for local residents. Youth who are interested in applying for the FACE program can download and submit an application at www.urgentinc.org. Youth must be between the ages of 14-24 and reside within the Overtown Community Redevelopment boundaries. A very limited number of youth will also be selected from within the City of Miami District 5.
The deadline to apply is June 6, 2016. For more information contact Urgent Inc. atterrance@urgentinc.orgor (786) 581-7821.
